  • Community Service Project - The Boys' Brigade Sharity Gift Box (December 1996)

Sharity Gift Box.
An annual project organised by the Boys' Brigade for the National Council of Social Service.  More than 50 of our Boys were involved in this Community Service Project. Boys were exposed to the plight of the poor and less fortunate in Singapore whilst collecting, sorting and delivering gifts to them. The Guest-of-Honour officiating our events  include BG George Yeo, Minister for Environment and Minister for Information and the  Arts. Mr Abdullah Tarmugi, Minister for Community Development was the Guest of Honour for the Closing Ceremony.  
      This year, for the first time, Woodlands Secondary School participated in this meaningful project involving all the teachers and students to collect gifts for the less fortunate.  Members of various Uniform Groups came together during the school holiday and distributed all the gifts collected by the school. For the record, The Straits Times, Lianhe Zaobao and Television Corporation of Singapore provided extensive coverage of Woodlands Secondary School involvement.

  • Training
 
     The Company has been placing heavy emphasis on Character Building and Leadership Development. Weekly lessons on Character Building were conducted to Boys based on Christian Principles. Other training programmes are as follows: 
 
  • Target Award Programme 
25 new members had undergone the Training Programme, which comprises of a three-month theoretical and practical course. Equipping the members with the fundamental knowledge of The Boys' Brigade and the Company, they also learnt basic drill movements and underwent a Recruit's Orientation Camp that teaches camping skills. At the end of the programme they were awarded the Target Badge. 
 
  • Leadership Training Course (Company) 
The Company's Annual training programme conducted in March for NCOs and NCOs-to-be. The course serves tocompliment the Brigade conducted Leadership Development Course by imparting "hardware" skills. The course serves to equip the NCOs with skills relevant to the Company needs. 
 
  • Leadership Development Course II (BB Headquarters) 
Our Company sent 10 Senior NCOs to attend the Brigade-organised, Leadership Development Course II, in Nov '97.  Lessons were conducted through outdoor projects. All Boys were given the opportunity to experience and practice leadership. 
 
  • Awards Programme 
Throughout the whole year, the Company conducted Badge work programme for Boys to provide an all-rounded, balanced programme (Social; Educational; Physical; Spiritual). 
 
  • Awards covered in 1997 are as follows: 
First Aid, Expedition, Campers, Physical Training, Drill, Swimming, Craft, Safety and Christian Education. 
 
  • Programmes
 
     Our normal weekly parades take place on Saturday in Woodlands Secondary School from 7.30am to 11.30pm. There are, however, other enriching activities, which were held at other places with variable time frames. The following are highlights of events and programme of 1997: 
 
  • Recruitment Campaign 
On 4 January 1997, during the school open house for all Secondary one students and Parents, the Company was out full force to put up an exhibition on the activities of The Boys' Brigade. 
 
  • BB Day (8 January 1997) 
The Boys celebrated the BB Day on the 8 January 1997 in School by putting on BB Full Uniform for school. During the assembly, Mdm Lim Soon Wah (Teacher-in-charge) read the BB Message by Mr Tan Boon Chiang (Hon. BB President). 
 
  • Recruits' Orientation Cum 2nd Anniversary Celebration (11 January 1997) 
A total of 25 new members attended the Company Recruits' Orientation Parade Cum 2nd Anniversary Celebration. The NCOs planned a whole morning of games and sing-a-long, allowing the older Boys to get to know the new members. After the morning of fun activities, there was a cake cutting ceremony and refreshment prepared by our own Boys at the school's home economics room, supervised by Mdm Lim Soon Wah. 
 
  • Chinese New Year Celebration 
On 8 February 1997, the Company celebrated Lunar New Year by organising a get-together for the Company Boys at Sunset way for a buffet steamboat & BBQ. 
 
  •  Leadership Training Course - Company (15 & 16 March 1997)
 
     A total of 40 Boys were selected to attend the Company conducted course - Leadership Training Course. The course was conducted at Woodlands Secondary School from 15 -17 March 1997. 
     Topics like qualities of a leader, squad management, song leading, games leading, presentation skills and public speaking were conducted, in lectures and practical, hands-on method. 
     Main cores of speakers were our very own officers. We would like to record a word of thanks to Mr Christopher Lock (Cpt, SP Primers) and Mr Shenton Sng (Chairman- Seniors Section) for conducting some of the courses. 
 
  • Recruits' Orientation Camp (17 - 19 March 1997)
 
     This year's Recruit Orientation Camp was conducted on at BB/GB Sembawang Campsite. The camp was attended by 20 new members and 10 Secondary 2 members. The Organising Committee are SGT Kevin Loh (Chairman), SGT Ang Yong Wei, SGT Khor Teck Ming, SGT See Kok Loon, CPL Lau Chee Haw and CPL Lin Zheng Fei. 
     BB activities like canoeing, mountain biking, omega descending and lots of outdoor games to build the Boys' confidence and teamwork was conducted during the camp. 
 
  • BB & GB Combined Enrolment Parade/Service - 21st April 1996
 
     Woodlands Secondary School and the 66th BB Company were proud to be the host for the Combined Enrolment Parade for the 34th, 44th, 66th Boys' Brigade companies and the 23rd Girls' Brigade company on the 21st of April this year. The Guest of Honour for this event was an ex-BB Boy, Assoc Prof Ho Peng Kee, Senior Parliamentary Secretary (Home Affairs & Law) and  Member of Parliament for Sembawang GRC. The Boys' Brigade president Mr Peter Foo and the Girls' Brigade vice-presdent Ms Angela Yap were also there to grace the event together with the principals of the various secondary schools. Members from the sponsoring church, Adam Road Presbyterian Centre, also turned out in full force to lend support to this annual event. 
     After all the required salutes were given, Professor Ho Peng Kee delivered an encouraging speech and was invited to inspect the Guard-of-Honour. Professor Ho then went on to present several GB and BB officers their new ranks. Our congratulations to these officers. 
     The Boys, Girls and their officers practised hard for this Parade, and the results were very rewarding.The audience were treated to a fine display of drill from the Guard-of-Honour contingent comprising of Boys from the 66th BB Coy and Girls from the 23rd GB Coy. Also on hand to lend its support was the 10th BB Coy's Bagpipe band. They provided the marching music for the Parade and as a finale, performed an impressive Scottish dance that amazed the audience. It would be safe to say that few in the audience have seen such a display. 
     The Enrolment Service was held in the school's auditorium. Everyone had a good time of singing and Pastor Chris Chia gave a sermon.  The Boys, Girls and all their officers renewed their pledges to the BB and GB. To end the day, everyone was invited for lunch at the canteen where new friendships were made and empty stomachs filled.
 
  • Overseas Exchange Programme, Malaysia (20th - 24th November 1996)
 
     40 Boys participated in the Company overseas trip to Penang, KL and Malacca. The Company met up with BB Boys from KL and Penang for combined activities.
 
  • Recruits' Passing-Out-Parade Cum Awards Day (Saturday, 19th April 1997)
 
     On that day, we witnessed the graduation of 30 new members to the rank of Private. The Best Recruit for 1997 was Rec Jesher Chen. During the Parade, Awards were given out and some Boys were also promoted to the next higher rank. This year, the Company introduced the "Drill Down Competition", and after a fierce competition, SGT Kevin Loh emerged as the winner for the Best Drill for 1997. The Organising Committee members for the event are SGT Jonathon Lim (Chairman), CPL Kelvin Wang, CPL Ong Han Wei, SGT Andy Yap Rongli, CPL Seow Chee Keong and CPL Goh Chee Ann.  There was also a preview of the Band. To officiate the event was Mr Leong Kah Chong, Principal of Woodlands Secondary School.
 
  • Combined Enrolment Service & Parade (20th April 1997)
 
     The Company participated in the Annual Combined Enrolment Service Parade and Service for The Boys' Brigade 34th, 44th, 66th Singapore Company and The Girls' Brigade 23rd Singapore Company. 
     Mr Lim Siong Guan (Permanent Secretary, Prime Minister's Office & Education), an ex-BB Boy himself, was the Guest-of-Honour for the event. VIPs amongst the guests were The Boys' Brigade President, The Girls' Brigade Chief Commissioner, Assoc Prof Lawrence Chia (Prinsep Street Presbyterian Church, Session Clerk), Mr Leong Kah Chong (Principal, Woodlands Secondary School), The Boys' Brigade Secretary and Captains of various BB companies.
 
  • Company Expedition at Pulau Ubin (8 & 9 September 1997)
 
     A Company Expedition was conducted at Pulau Ubin for a total of 55 Boys. Many thanks to Mr Ang Yeok Wee and his team of officers (Mr Ang Kian Seng, Mr Kenneth Lee, Mr Tan Sin Cheng) for organising the hike. 
 
  • OC Evening '97 (20 September 1997)
 
     For the first time, The Boys' Brigade organised the Closing Session function with the Girls' Guide from Woodlands Secondary School. The Boys & Girls have a good evening of fun, playing games, singing songs, wonderful buffet and the programme ended with a talentime by the Boys & Girls. 
     It was a wonderful evening that brought The Boys' Brigade and Girl Guides together.  All of us had a good time playing and getting to know each other.  A council, formed from both the uniformed groups, planned the programs of the night. 
     The introduction started at six with a speech from the captain of The Boys' Brigade and another from the teacher-in-charge of the Girl Guides. Then came the Opening Ceremony where six "red indians" appeared with drums, sticks and fire. The first performance was led by Jonathan Lim of The Boys' Brigade, dressed up like Michael Jackson and entertained everyone. Before dinner was served, we played a few games which everyone enjoyed very much. 
     It was during dinnertime that we really interacted and got to know one another better.  After that was table games and we continued with Talentime where participating teams sang and performed. At the end of the night's program, we had some dancing, singing and exchanging of gifts. All of us had a good time together and enjoyed ourselves very much.
 
  • Orchard Road Light-up - Community Chest Event (13 Nov 1997)
 
     The Company participated in the Annual Orchard Road Light Up, a fund raising event for the Community Chest of Singapore. 40 Boys from our Company formed part of the Guard-of-Honour for our President, His Excellency, Mr Ong Teng Cheong and the First Lady. 
 
  • The Boys' Brigade Sharity Gift Box 1997 (7 December 1997)
 
     Besides being involved in the Woodlands Secondary School Sharity Gift Box event, the Company also volunteered 40 Boys on the 7 December 1997 to collect, sort, pack and deliver food items to the needy in Singapore. 
 
  • Youth Convention - Adam Road Presbyterian Centre (20 - 23 Dec 1997)
 
     A total of 30 Boys participated in the Youth Convention organised by Adam Road Presbyterian Centre. The Convention seeks to develop our Boys leadership potential and the theme for the Camp was "Dare To Be"
 
  • Recruits' Passing-Out-Parade Cum Awards Day (April 1998)

During the Parade, Awards were given out and some Boys were also promoted to the next higher rank. The winner of this year Drill-Down Competition is SSG Kelvin Wang. There was also a mini band performance by the 66th Trumpet and Fife Band. To officiate the event was Mr Leong Kah Chong, Principal of Woodlands Secondary School.
